The Quest Begins…In my blog at Walking The World recently, I stated that I wanted to find one million people who would each donate $10.00 per year to help plant trees, build schools and provide clean cook stoves to families in Central America.
Helping build a classroom for the small community of Guadalupe Arriba, near the municipality of Matagalpa in Nicaragua, is the first step in this Quest.
Worldwide there are more than 100 million children not enrolled in primary or secondary school. We know that when children have access to educational opportunities they have a better chance of breaking the cycle of poverty.
In many cases, there are just not enough schools, or any schools at all, for kids to attend. But in Guadalupe Arriba, there is quite a different reason why the community and the Ministry of Education are asking for help to add extra classroom space.
Currently, 5th and 6th graders in Guadalupe Arriba attend classes in the afternoon because there is not enough classroom space to accommodate everyone during the morning hours. However, during the afternoons in rainy season, rivers become too dangerous to cross, meaning kids just stay at home. (If you’ve ever had to cross a fast flowing stream or river on your travels, you’ll know how dangerous this is. Imagine crossing those same rivers when you were a 5th or 6th grader!)
Guadalupe Arriba needs helping building a large classroom so 5th and 6th graders can attend school during the morning hours and avoid dangerous stream crossings.
Cost for the classroom – $15,000.
Benefit from this effort: Priceless.
Effort required: No physical labor at all – just a donation of $10.00 – or more of course – and sharing this message as widely as possible.
Timeline: I would like to complete funding by November 30, 2012.
How to Donate: If you can pay by check, there are no merchant fees involved. That’s good for everybody. Or if you prefer, you can use PayPal.
